Looking Back, Stepping Forward is an evening-length collaboration between choreographer Rachel Linsky, Music Director Nat Seelen, ZACHOR Dance Projects, and Ezekiel’s Wheels Klezmer Band. Fusing elements of Yiddish folk dance into contemporary choreography, the work is a reflection on diasporic identity. It investigates what it means to honor our histories while allowing tradition to live, change, and evolve in our bodies. Through live dialogue between music and dance, past and present, individual and collective, the work offers a joyful model of cultural exchange. It celebrates how these traditions create space for individual expression inside of community, and it demonstrates that living traditions endure not by remaining unchanged, but by continuing to evolve.

“Looking Back, Stepping Forward” began as a commission from the Jewish Arts Collaborative and the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, where the first segments of the work were premiered. The piece was later expanded with support from a fellowship through the Memorial Foundation for Jewish Culture and the Urbanity X residency, as well as generous funding from the Massachusetts Cultural Council, the Combined Jewish Philanthropies Arts & Culture Community Impact Grant Fund, Boston Moving Arts Productions, and the Somerville Arts Council.
